课程概述

Have you ever wondered what it would take for humans to travel beyond the comforts of our home planet, Earth? You are invited to join us in Space Medicine - an online experience facilitated by two recent Duke graduates in which you will learn about and engage in the most pressing medical challenges facing NASA and others advancing the future of space exploration. Space Medicine is a free, non-certificate course featuring interactive modules and weekly live discussions. Participants will reflect on questions pertinent to the future of human health in space, such as: - How do humans respond to extreme environments? - How can engineers, doctors, and scientific researchers come together to prevent space related health issues before they occur? - If future generations of humans attempt to live in space, what challenges will they face? - Which evolutionary adaptations to living on Earth are useful to surviving a months- or years-long voyage? No prior experience in science or medicine is required, as life science concepts will be introduced as necessary. At the end of the course, you will have gained valuable experience in applying modern medicine to space-based situations, from space flight to journeying to Mars....

Exceptional and this is exactly what I want to learn about Space Medicine which will be useful for setting up Martian colonies.

There are many mistakes in this course - especially the introductory lesson on how combustion relates to respiration. I'm a specialist science teacher with 25 years of experience, teaching 11-20 year olds Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, to A-Level and Undergrad level. The more advanced lessons are ok, but greatly lacking in detail and explanations - good luck to any inexperienced people in understanding the gas laws and how they impact space medicine! The mistakes aren't just in some of the (really basic and therefore inexcusable) science lessons, but in the quizzes at the end of each section - from things being asked for that haven't once been discussed, to incorrect answers, demanding a single answer but expecting multiple, and grammatical mistakes... I found these errors very challenging to deal with. I can handle my own failures when justified, but not repeated 'failures' that are actually due to their poor assessment formats. Then there are the AWFUL transcripts - they've been written using simple dictation software BUT at no point have they then been read through and corrected. And it's a serious error that will impact learners who have hearing difficulties, as key scientific terms are repeatedly misspelled ('baroreceptors' becomes 'barrow receptors', just as one of hundreds of examples). All of these have been reported, but I doubt anything will be done to correct them. There is also the issue of Dominic as an instructor. I hate to criticise a teacher of any kind, but his lecturing style is exceptionally disconcerting. The constant waving of his hands, the head looking off to the right instead of looking towards the camera, and the reading of a script, made it very challenging to focus on what he was saying. In the end, I stopped his videos and simply read through the transcript (which was much faster anyway). I understand he's not a natural performer or a natural teacher, but as such, he should not have been put in front of the camera, as his discomfort makes it challenging to focus on the lesson. The guest speakers contributed hugely to the course BUT watching old 'live' zoom classes is not an effective way to teach or learn material. It would have been far better to have them guest lecture and record actual videos for the course, rather than simply showing old zoom calls. In this way, it would have ensured they could teach the material fully, they could include visual aids (instead of trying to use their hands to indicate things), and they wouldn't go off-topic discussing unrelated matters. Those zoom classes should have been used as a starting point to develop full lessons. The expert guest lecturers are where the bulk of the learning takes place. I appreciate that these courses are free and take considerable time to plan and implement. But I don't believe in half-arsing teaching. Do it well, or don't do it at all. The three stars are for engaging and informative material. The missing two stars is for it being, at times, poorly taught, discriminating against the hard of hearing, full of mistakes, and lacking in depth.
